What it’s really like to use the Shark PowerDetect 2-in-1

The quick take

If you need a grab-and-go vacuum that can handle different floor types without you fussing with settings, this Shark is a solid choice for everyday messes. Its whole “PowerDetect” thing is basically auto-pilot for suction. It just ramps up when it hits a patch of crumbs and then eases off to save battery. It works. Hard floors look great after one pass, and it does a surprisingly good job on low and medium carpets. It even holds its own with pet hair for a cordless vac in this price range. Now, for the trade-offs. It's not built for deep, plush carpets, the dustbin is on the small side, and you'll probably want a spare battery if you have a larger home. But believe it or not, that PowerDetect feature feels genuinely useful—not just a gimmick.

What we really liked

The best part is not having to think about power modes. That PowerDetect auto-adjust really is the main event, giving you a boost right when you need it. On our hard floors, it picked up everything from fine dust to bigger debris without just pushing it around. And the floor head is slim and nimble. You can actually get it under the sofa and steer it cleanly around furniture legs. Popping it into handheld mode is super quick, and the tools it comes with make short work of stairs, cars, and baseboards. For daily use, it's light, simple to empty, and easy to keep clean with a quick filter rinse. It just works.

But let's be real about its limits. If you have super plush rugs, you'll still want a beefier, higher-torque vacuum. We also noticed it can leave a faint line of dust right along baseboards, but a quick second pass usually fixes that. It gets pretty loud on max power, too—a distinct high-pitched whine. And if you've got a pet that sheds a ton, you'll be emptying that little bin often. One last thing: really pay attention to the bundle you're buying. Some come with extra tools or a second battery, and some don't. So if you're set on deep-cleaning thick carpet or doing the whole house in one go, we'd say you should either look for a bundle with that extra battery or consider a more powerful model.
