Living with the SureFeed: What we learned

So, who is this actually for?

If you've got another pet raiding the food bowl, a cat on a prescription diet, or you're trying to manage weight, the SureFeed Microchip Pet Feeder Connect is, believe it or not, one of the calmest fixes we've found. It only unlocks for your pet's specific microchip (or a special collar tag) and then seals back up between meals. That keeps wet food from getting crusty and cuts down on odors. Add the Hub, and the app lets you see when and how much your pet is eating. You can even set specific targets in grams, which is a huge help for picky eaters or pets recovering from surgery. It also works for small dogs, as long as they can fit under the arch. But look, if you just have one easygoing cat and you don't need all the app data—or you really just want to automate dry food feedings—you can save some money. The non-Connect SureFeed or a regular automatic feeder will do the job without the extra complexity.

Living with the SureFeed: What we learned

What we liked and what to consider

Here's what it gets right: The microchip recognition is fast and reliable once your pet is trained. It quietly puts an end to bowl guarding and lets anxious animals eat in peace. That soft-sealing lid is also a bigger deal than it seems, especially for wet food, because it slows down drying and helps keep flies away. With the Sure Petcare Hub (which is sold separately), the app becomes your command center, logging visits and how much was eaten. The built-in scale lets you be way more precise with portions than just eyeballing it. And the bowls and mat just pop out for the dishwasher. Now, for the trade-offs. You'll need one feeder per pet for real diet control, and a very determined 'shoulder surfer' might still try to sneak a bite—the optional rear cover helps with that a lot. It’s also pricier than a standard microchip feeder, and you absolutely need the Hub for any of the app features. The motor does make a brief noise, so a skittish pet might take a few days to get used to it. Battery life is decent, but not infinite, so keep some spares on hand. And while the feeder always works, the app data depends on your internet, so it won't sync up if your Wi-Fi is down.

Setup is pretty simple. You pair the feeder, press the learn button when your pet gets close, and you're set. There's a handy training mode that opens the lid wider over a few days so they don't get spooked. A quick tip: If you care about the data and remote alerts, set up the Sure Petcare Hub right away. Without it, the feeder still works to keep food sealed and portioned, you just don't get any of the app insights. We found it works best when you put it in a low-traffic spot to reduce crowding from other pets. When you're weighing out food, make sure it's on a level surface and let the scale settle for a second for the best accuracy. It's compatible with most standard microchips, and you can buy an RFID collar tag if your pet isn't chipped. For longevity, just remember the bowls and mat are dishwasher-safe, but the main unit should only be wiped down. And don't worry—if your internet goes out, the feeder itself still recognizes your pet and works just fine.
